About Awesome Sauce: I had the pleasure of visiting this distillery with Kai in 2018. The ryes are just off the charts and this “.1” is a wild one. Loads of spiced fruit, menthol and honey give way to vanilla and dark chocolate. 100% rye and, in a word, awesome.

Tasting Panel Note: Steady yourself, as this was something very unusual – the nose had buckets full of dried spiced red fruits, treacle, manuka honey, incense and resin. Nothing could prepare us for the taste neat, like a spicy Jamaican sarsaparilla beer: intense flavours of liquorice, caramel, vanilla and wintergreen, with a finish delivering an almighty heat-rub eucalyptus freshness. Water added the aromas of barrel-aged maple syrup, butterscotch, vanilla pods and cocoa powder. On the palate things were now a lot softer, with a cup of black leaf tea, a Chelsea bun and blackberry jam on toast. The never-ending finish had plenty of wood spice and dark bitter chocolate.
