Initial nosing suggested orange syrup, dessert wines, citrus curds and spiced marmalade. We also got a gentle leathery richness, backed by flower nectars and milk chocolate. Water brought out toasted walnuts, pine wood, lanolin and pipe tobacco. This was rich, easy and pleasing, we all agreed. The palate initially displayed varied wood spices, drier earthier tones, more pipe tobacco and strawberry wine. With water it revealed a more playful side, delivering honeycomb, lemon meringue pie and assorted candied nuts and citrus peels. This was matured in an ex-bourbon hogshead for 14 years before being transferred to a first fill Spanish oak oloroso hogshead.
