The nose evoked Islay beach bonfires, with embers and ash from tar-spotted driftwood and dried seaweed; we also got tobacco, leather, orange boxes and crème brûlée. Tasting it, twisters of smoke widened our eyes as we endured burnt marshmallows, salted caramel, liquorice allsorts, charred pineapple and Skoal Bandits; the finish suggested dental mouthwash or chewing a fireman’s glove. The reduced nose added fish nets and bacon to the campfire, while the palate discovered black figs, chilli chocolate and salted popcorn, finishing with barbeque smoke, exhaust fumes and offshore oilrigs. Ten years in ex-bourbon wood, then introduced to a refill Spanish oak sherry hogshead.
