The palate had an endearing ‘cheeky chappie’ youthfulness – wood smoke, tree bark, light tar and liquorice, Refreshers, lemon and orange sweets, candle wax, coal dust and leather boots. With water, the nose became more maritime – tarry driftwood, lobster creels and storm-tossed seaweed at high tide – also black tea, cereals and vanilla custard slice.
