This is a region on the rise with over one dozen new distilleries producing whisky. Its past is littered with now closed distilleries as well, sites that once produced incredible malt you may only bid on at auction these days. But a few have stayed the course over the centuries like today’s offering. \u003cstrong data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDistillery 5 Rare Release Around the Clock \u003c\/strong\u003eis a marriage of 18-year-old casks sourced from first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and has everything you would expect of an elegant, older Lowland whisky – in this case it’s triple distilled, with narrow cut points and matured in active bourbon wood to bring an absolutely delicious “Sweet, Fruity \u0026amp; Mellow” flavour profile to your glass. Age and beauty abound in this classic bottling for your collection!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOur celebratory bottle is joined by a whisky that pays homage to the agricultural importance of the Lowlands. While barley was grown in pockets of other regions, the landscape of the Lowlands lent itself to the production of vast amounts of grain, including wheat, oats and barley. Thus, many a grain distillery calls the Lowlands home. \u003cstrong data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eCask No. G10.36 Tantalisingly Tasty\u003c\/strong\u003e started in ex-bourbon wood before transfer to a second-fill heavy toast\/medium char hogshead. The nose delivered maple syrup, soft vanilla, attractive wood and a savoury suggestion of grilled maple-cured bacon. The silky smooth palate tasted of brown sugar, coconut cream, Oreos and a tantalising treat of tropical fruits; the finish had intriguing herbal notes and unexpected heft. The reduced nose turned even more exotic – oak shavings, old school desks and autumn leaves, lemon balm, incense sticks and a funky aroma of ripe fruit rancio. Mouthcoating on the palate neat with honeydew melon, red velvet cake, glace cherries and strawberry tarts always with that underlying hint of freshly ground peppercorns. Water released a resinous scent as well as polished oak and beeswax and, with time, Dundee marmalade and sugar-coated pecans appeared. Immediate notes of desiccated coconut, chantilly cream, vanilla custard, lemon barley water and a very elegant waft of hessian. With water we found it became very rummy with lots of caramelising demerara sugars, molasses, charred marshmallow and a lightly mentholated touch. The neat palate opened with boiled cinnamon sweeties, spiced latte, banana and rum cocktails, candied sultanas and charred pineapple chunks. Reduction softened everything and brought out golden syrups, sweetened sunflower oil, oatmeal flapjack and banana liqueur drizzled over vanilla ice cream.
